Advisory Project Selection Criteria
Benefits of Hosting an Advisory Project
Examples of Past Advisory Projects
Advisory Project Selection Criteria

The GIVE Advisory Project experience follows a human centered design approach to understand challenges and develop solutions. As part of our application process, we DO NOT SOLICIT SPECIFIC CHALLENGES of your organization. Instead, we are seeking nonprofits with strong leadership and a willingness to be OPEN to exploring various challenges with their team of fellows. This team TOGETHER aligns on which challenge to tackle based on a collaborative structured process facilitated by GIVE.

Therefore, it is critical that Advisory Project applicants possess the following characteristics and intent:

*A primary contact for the project who provides strong, consistent leadership of organization. This person leads with vision and has decision making ability for the organization. Executive Director or similar position preferred but not required.

*Willingness to be open and vulnerable about where the organization needs support. Transparency on what works, what doesn’t and comfort with giving fellows access to speak to your board, clients, staff, stakeholders, or others that may have knowledge of or investment in your challenge.

*Commitment to responsive communication with your fellows and BVM staff.

*Allowing your fellows to attend a board meeting.
*Attending every mandatory meeting time below.

*Strong relationship building skills and ability to guide a high performing skilled group to desired outcomes. Business Volunteers will also support movement toward outcomes in the Working Groups.

Benefits of Hosting an Advisory Project

* Leverage professional skills and expertise in highly valued fields to support a business challenge or expand a growth opportunity for your organization.

* Grow your network of regional professionals and businesses to engage champions in your work.

* Develop a pipeline of future advisors, consultants, and board members.

* Deepen your partnership with Business Volunteers Maryland.

* Participate in Turtle Tank to potentially win funding for your nonprofit organization.

Examples of Past Advisory Projects

* GIVE Fellows discovered a youth-services organization had missed opportunity to expand the business skills of young artists. The Advisory Team created a comprehensive business development proposal to boost future revenue and brand awareness by selling products created by artists.

* GIVE Fellows deepened their understanding of local history and identified walking tours as a new opportunity for a local nonprofit.  The Advisory Team pitched and piloted a corporate development and outreach strategy for the organization.

* GIVE Fellows observed an anti-hunger organization and found a need to increase volunteer recruitment, engagement, and retention.  The Advisory Team helped the organization develop an “elevator speech” and refine the volunteer orientation and engagement process.

Congratulations to the GIVE Fellowship Class of 2020

November 6, 2020 by Tracy O’Connor

Congratulations to the graduating class of Business Volunteers Maryland’s GIVE Fellowship. On Friday, November 13, 2020, Business Volunteers will host a virtual celebration to recognize forty-six rising professionals who amplified their civic engagement, deepened their relationship with Baltimore, and connected with community leaders from across the region. The 2020 class of GIVE will join a network of 450+ GIVE alumni.

When Business Volunteers transformed the fellowship into a virtual experience due to COVID-19, the GIVE Advisory Projects (GAP) remained a core component of the program. The GAP connected nonprofits with GIVE fellows who served as skilled volunteers over a six-month period. From conducting interviews to participating in volunteer activities, GIVE Fellows worked in small teams to learn about their nonprofit partner, the community served by the organization, and the challenges faced by the nonprofit’s leaders. Teams were paired with a GIVE alumnus who served as their project mentor as fellows followed a collaborative process. Each year, GAP teams develop recommendations and solutions that increased nonprofits’ capacity to do good. better.

This year’s GIVE fellows were introduced to collective impact practices and partnered with organizations committed to strengthening Baltimore for youth. GIVE fellows will present their projects with their teams during graduation.

Our graduating fellows, their GAP teams, and the alumni mentors are presented below.

The Benefits of Business Volunteers’ GIVE Fellowship

October 23, 2019 by BVMD Staff

While graduate school might come to mind when you think about a fellowship program, things have changed over the past few years! Professional fellowship opportunities, like the GIVE Fellowship at Business Volunteers Maryland, are designed to help cultivate leaders, grow networks, offer unparalleled professional development opportunities and have a positive impact on the community. What are some of the benefits of GIVE?

Professional Development

Fellowships offer structured education and professional development opportunities designed to help those who want to make a difference in their community. They offer the resources, support and networks needed to learn new things and pursue goals that would seem unreachable otherwise. Our GIVE Fellowship offers a wealth of personal and professional development opportunities to every fellow.

Leadership Skills

Especially when an individual is a rising star in their field or in the start or mid-point of their career, leadership skills can be imperative to their future success. The opportunity to cultivate those skills in a positive and challenging environment is unique to a fellowship program, and many individuals from our GIVE Fellowship program go on to take leadership roles within their companies or by serving on nonprofit boards and more.

Expand Your Network

A fellowship program will also connect you with like-minded individuals and those who already have successful careers in the field you are interested in. Fellowships typically include a combination of trainings and networking events that expand the fellow’s reach and network. Through expanding your network, you are also better equipped to learn professional development and leadership skills through proximity to knowledgeable professionals.

All About GIVE

Our fellowship program is known as GIVE. GIVE is designed to create a stronger community, develop your leadership skills, give you access to a broad network of professionals and help you grow personally and professionally. The program is a nine-month commitment and consists of monthly workshops, action projects, networking opportunities and events. Numerous high-profile employers participate in our program and benefit from having their already-dynamic employees become even closer to reaching their potential.

Participate in an Amazing Fellowship Program

Business Volunteers Maryland is a nonprofit dedicated to strengthening the community by creating strategic connections between businesses, nonprofits and individuals.
